Approximately 11 million American youth under the age of 21 drink alcohol. Nearly half of them drink to excess, consuming five or more drinks in a row, one or more times in a two week period.
Alcohol is the most frequently used drug by high school seniors, and its use is increasing. Boys usually try alcohol for the first time at just 11 years old, while the average age for American girls’ first drink is 13. In short, our nation’s youth are flirting with disaster. Consider the facts:
· Underage drinking is a factor in nearly half of all teen automobile crashes, the leading cause of death among teenagers.
· Alcohol use contributes to youth suicides, homicides and fatal injuries – the leading cause of death among youth after auto crashes.
· Alcohol abuse is linked to as many as two-thirds of all sexual assaults and date rapes of teens and college students.
· Alcohol is a major factor in unprotected sex among youth, increasing their risk of contracting HIV or other transmitted diseases.

Grace and peace in the name of our Lord, Jesus.
This year at ATF we are having a session where we have students write down something that they are struggling with, or something that has hurt them in a big way. We are then having the students bring those things down and nail them to a cross, signifying the end to the era of that problem hanging over them. Today we were reading over some of the things that students have nailed to the cross, and it was heartbreaking. These kids wrote things like “I cut myself”, “My dad calls me bad names”, “I let guys take advantage of me”, “I am disgusting.” Is this breaking your heart yet? This is why we do Acquire The Fire. This is why you are in youth ministry. These broken kids, these hurting babies, they are “the least of these” that Jesus talks about. The girl who wrote “I try to pretend I am somewhere else when he touches me” she could be in your youth group. She might come to ATF. She is the reason we are in ministry. This is a fallen, lost, dying generation. It is time for us to pick them up, help them find The Way, and bring them to real life! We ask that you fight with us in this war for a broken generation.
